I'm afraid I beg to differ: not all of the online collaboration tools are about project-management (for example WebMeeting or Diigo), and they certainly are not Basecamp clones (Central Desktop stands out as offering WAY more features than Basecamp). Having read your article, it's interesting that you are promoting Wrike, which is one of the online collaboration tools I have looked at in the past, and discounted it as a Basecamp clone ;-)

It doesn't matter which one you choose because essentially all the PM (aka collaboration) tools (whether free or paid) are more or less the same (basecamp clones). Unfortunately this is what this industry is about, different products, same core, different pricing and plans.

I've published an article on the <a href='http://www.pmhut.com/what-would-an-ideal-project-management-tool-look-like' rel="nofollow">ideal pm/collaboration tool</a> as perceived by someone prominent in this industry.

Excellent writeup! Your article will really be a help to those who are not able to make out which tool is good for them.

@ Lucy:
YahooGroups or GoogleGroups are good for ease of use, but do be careful about jumping in with these if you think you will likely need to migrate elsewhere shortly. It can be difficult to export conversations from these tools and import them into a new one, and it would be a shame to lose momentum or formatting on your threads during the switchover.

@ Kelley:
Thanks for the comment; I will make sure I include a couple of suggestions for enterprise-level collaboration tools. Out of curiosity, how many people are in your global PS community? And how do they currently collaborate (if at all)?

Miko,

I look forward to your next article. As you may or may not remember I work in the Professional Services group for a hosted software development company. We are currently working on a project that includes analyzing online collaboration tools, but we need to be able to support the global PS community, multiple/different projects for each person and include some (or all) of this functionality:
    * I want to share documents online, and let others edit them
    * I want to manage a project that has lots of remote stakeholders, and easily keep everyone up-to-date
    * I want to be able to easily track all of the things my team and our external partners are working on together
    * I want a central place where all the discussions and files about a project can be stored and accessed

As I said, I look forward to your next article!

Great advice, Miko. We need something urgently to hook up newly trained nationwide trainers with each other and get them exchanging information, posting training materials and commenting on them. There should also be space for our in-house team to post information.
In the future we might want a diary or integration with Microsoft Outlook. We should also consider data security, access and migration.
Maybe we could start with Yahoo Groups and then move on from there. Just so we catch their enthusiasm right at the beginning of their training.
Hmmm.
